J-Rod’s State Semifinal Picks
(all games at Faller Field in Middletown)
- Millbrook vs. Cambridge, 4 p.m.: Cambridge is the defending state champion and top-ranked team in the state, but guess what? Millbrook won’t be intimidated or back down. I love the way the young Blazers have developed this year, but the champs are too much.
The pick: Cambridge
- Burke Catholic vs. Holy Trinity, 11 a.m.: The Eagles enter as the favorite against a Holy Trinity team that should not be taken lightly, especially since it rolls out a Division I lineman (Liam Maloney). But Burke Catholic has come together nicely on both sides of the ball and seems destined to punch its ticket to Syracuse.
The pick: Burke Catholic
- Troy vs. Newburgh, 7 p.m.: Like Millbrook, Newburgh gets a shot at the defending champ, which put away the Goldbacks last year en route to the title. Newburgh has the speed and athleticism to keep up with Troy, but the question is do the Goldbacks have the depth and can they limit big plays by the Section 2 power?
The pick: Newburgh
- Last week: 2-2
- Season record: 134-34
