JRod’s state quarterfinal playoff football picks
Note: Newburgh has received a bye in the state quarterfinals and will play New Rochelle or Troy in the semifinals.
- Cornwall vs. Yorktown, 7 p.m. Friday at Dietz Stadium, Kingston: After four straight state semifinal appearances, Cornwall has lost its first state playoff game (quarterfinals) the last two seasons. The Green Dragons lost to eventual state champion Somers last year. Expect Cornwall to get a real run from Yorktown, but punch its ticket back to the final four.
The pick: Cornwall
- Marlboro vs. Pleasantville, 7:30 p.m. Friday at Mahopac High School: Like years before, Marlboro continues to make big plays in big spots in the playoffs. It’s almost uncanny and has proven to be a difference maker for the Iron Dukes in close postseason games over the season. Marlboro will need to make even more plays against Pleasantville, the slight favorite.
The pick: Pleasantville
- Burke Catholic vs. Albertus Magnus, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Dietz Stadium: The Eagles took out Section 1 Class C players Dobbs Ferry and Woodlands this year, but Albertus Magnus, playing in the state title for the first time, presents an even bigger challenge.
The pick: Burke Catholic
- Tuckahoe vs. Millbrook, 4:30 p.m. on Friday at Mahopac: Millbrook surprised the Section 1 power a month ago, handing Tuckahoe a 35-34. Drew Jackson scored four touchdowns for Millbrook. Expect another close one.
The pick: Tuckahoe
- Last week: 5-0
- Season: 132-32
