Seven Section 9 teams ranked in NYSSWA’s first poll of the season

Cornwall checks in the highest at No. 8 in Class A

Cornwall quarterback Kieran Kreider and the Green Dragons start the season ranked eighth in Class A in the first NYSSWA poll of the year.

The New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA) released its first rankings of the season on Wednesday.

Cornwall was ranked the highest out of any Section 9 teams, checking in at No. 8 in Class A. The Green Dragons are the six-time defending Section 9 Class A champions and rolled over Goshen and Saugerties this year. Newburgh is ranked 10th in Class AA.

The Goldbacks host Pine Bush in a Class AA showdown at 7 p.m. on Friday. Pine Bush (2-0) is ranked 21st in the state. Veteran sportswriter Neil Kerr puts together the rankings each week with input from reporters throughout the state.

The Section 9 Football Insider’s Justin Rodriguez is a state football pollster.

“I was honored when Mr. Kerr and NYSSWA asked me to be a part of putting together the state rankings again,” Rodriguez said. “It’s always fun and serves as a great way to promote Section 9 football. I think Section 9 is well represented in the first poll and hopefully we see more schools make the rankings as the season progresses.”
