J-Rod’s Week 1 Section 9 Football Picks

Friday, August 31st

  • Saugerties at O’Neill, 6:30 p.m.: Burke Catholic and Marlboro are the talk of Class B, but don’t forget about O’Neill.
    The pick: O’Neill
  • Union-Endicott at Newburgh, 7 p.m.: The Goldbacks have another competitive non-league schedule lined up this year.
    The pick: Newburgh
  • Middletown at Warwick, 7 p.m.: Warwick OL Andre Ward is the real deal and the Wildcats will need him with a new and promising quarterback and running back.
    The pick: Warwick
  • Washingtonville at Minisink Valley, 7 p.m.: Any Minisink game this year could turn into a ‘Block Party’ with DL Anton Juncaj swatting down passes at the line.
    The pick: Minisink Valley
  • Cornwall at Pine Bush, 7 p.m.: Definitely the Game of the Week, with New Paltz vs. Marlboro a close second.
    The pick: Cornwall
  • Valley Central at Wallkill, 7 p.m.: I like this VC RB A.J. Williams as a player. Let’s see what he does this year.
    The pick: Valley Central
  • Burke Catholic at Roosevelt, 7 p.m.: Nice test for Burke Catholic, which is usually up for any challenge.
    The pick: Burke Catholic
  • New Paltz at Marlboro, 7 p.m.: So what if this is a non-league game, New Paltz vs. Marlboro still carries plenty of juice.
    The pick: Marlboro
  • Port Jervis at Chester, 7 p.m.: Formerly a Class A school, Port will play in Class B this year.
    The pick: Port Jervis
  • Millbrook at Highland, 7 p.m.: Millbrook graduated most of its playmakers from last year, but the Blazers have some other talent ready to make plays.
    The pick: Millbrook
  • Woodlands at Ellenville, 7 p.m.: Ellenville will play in the Class B Division II Group of Death with O’Neill, Liberty and Burke Catholic this season.
    The pick: Woodlands

Saturday, September 1st

  • Monroe Woodbury-Aquinas Institute, Carrier Dome in Syracuse, 1 p.m.: Let’s hope Monroe-Woodbury’s trip to the Carrier Dome isn’t the last for a local team this year.
    The pick: Aquinas
  • Kingston at Goshen, 1 p.m.: It’s a sad day when you have to make a Killenberger’s Kids reference for the 1,038th and last time, but Goshen is all grown up this year.
    The pick: Goshen
  • Monticello at Red Hook, 1 p.m.: Red Hook, young and hungry, looking to return the program to prominence.
    The pick: Red Hook
  • Liberty at Spackenkill, 1:30 p.m.: Great match-up of Spackenkill RB Dhyquem Lewinson and Liberty’s Kymanni Dennis. Might be toughest came to pick of the week.
    The pick: Liberty
  • Onteora at Rondout Valley, 2 p.m.: Onteora returned to varsity last year after a four-year hiatus due to a lack of players and it’s great that the Eagles have fielded a squad again this year.
    The pick: RV
