Close friends Manfredi and Jackson make Class D all-state second team

The bond between Millbrook’s Erik Manfredi and Drew Jackson began when they started playing modified together and it grew over the years, culminating this season with another state playoff run.

Manfredi and Jackson, both seniors, were the leaders of a young Millbrook team which reached the Class D state semifinals. Close friends, the pair can now share another accomplishment together: Manfredi and Jackson have both been honored as second-team all-stars by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

“Football is obviously not a one-man sport,” Jackson, a running back, said. Manfredi made all-state second team as an all-purpose player. “I think Erik and I complement each other very well. I run hard up the middle and he is the speedster. I think we both help each other do what we do. It’s been great playing with him over the years and I’m proud of this accomplishment.”

Jackson rushed for 1,270 yards and 16 touchdowns this season and also made 50 tackles on defense. Manfredi rushed for 1,376 yards and 16 touchdowns, making 71 tackles in the secondary. He had two interceptions and returned a kickoff for a touchdown in an impressive 42-20 win over Tuckahoe in the Class D state playoff quarterfinals.

Tuckahoe, a perennial Section 1 power, had beaten the Blazers 35-34 a month earlier. Millbrook (6-6) lost to two-time defending Class D state champion Cambridge 56-8 in the state semifinals. The Blazers overcame an 0-3 start, opening the season with losses to Dobbs Ferry, Section 9 Class C champion Burke Catholic and Pine Plains, to reach the final four.

Millbrook graduated 15 players from 2016’s Section 9 Class C runner-up team.

“Drew is aphysical and fast player who was the heart and soul of our team,” Millbrook coach Sean Keenan said. “He played about 96 percent of our total plays this year. His tough running made it possible to run our Double Wing-T this year.”

Keenan went on to praise Manfredi: “Erik’s big play ability made our team successful this year. His speed and toughness was evident on both sides of the ball. Whenever we needed a big play, he came through for us. He is one of the toughest kids ever to play for us in Millbrook.”
