Burke Catholic stars Ross and Przybocki named Class C first-team all-state

Burke Catholic running back David Ross felt underrated by some of his peers in Section 9 early this season.

However, it didn’t take long for Ross to make a name for himself, and everyone has much respect for him now. Ross was named a Section 9 Football Insider first-team all-star last month after rushing for 1,550 yards and 23 touchdowns for Burke Catholic. Now comes his latest honor: First-team all-state.

Ross and Burke Catholic linebacker Mark Przybocki were named to the New York State Sportswriters Association’s Class C first-team on Wednesday. Ellenville defensive back Ray Younger was named to the Class C all-state second team and Burke Catholic quarterback Heath Hoovler earned third-team honors.

“I felt like I was underestimated, but I stepped up and proved myself,” Ross, a senior, said. “I have to thank my coaches and my offensive line for so much help. I worked hard during the offseason and it paid off. I don’t think I’m underrated anymore, but what matters most is the team. I just wanted us to keep winning this year.”

Ross helped the Eagles reach the Class C state semifinals for the second year in a row, where they lost to Albany’s Holy Trinity 28-23. He put up one of the greatest games by a Section 9 player in the state playoffs in history, putting up 210 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-12 state quarterfinal win over Albertus Magnus. Ross’ big season came in a pressure spot.

He replaced star running back Garnett Nicolas, who played at Army West Point Prep this year. Nicolas rushed for 1,560 yards and 22 touchdowns last season. His most dominant performance came in a 35-28 loss to Ogdensburg Free Academy (OFA) in the semifinals of the Class C state semifinals.

Przybocki, a senior, was one of the best two-way players in Section 9. He led the team with 109 tackles also played H-back for the Eagles, catching eight passes for 153 yards with two touchdowns, while rushing for 219 yards and four scores. Przybocki moved to quarterback in Burke Catholic’s ‘Wildcat’ scheme, which was highlighted during the Holy Trinity game.

“It feels rewarding to make this team with David because we have been working so hard since our freshman year,” Przybocki said. “It all paid off in the end. It’s a great way to end my senior year and shows I left it all on the field. I have no regrets.”
